Gametogenesis is process of gamete formation. Meiosis is the process of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes i.e. DNA content to half in the resultant daughter cells. Gametes are (mostly) haploid cells and therefore are product of meiosis. Fusion of male and female gametes during syngamy restores the DNA content in the resultant offspring. To maintain the constant chromosome number over generations, gametogenesis occurs through meiosis to produce haploid gametes.
