Water Pollution

Text SolutionText solutionverified iconVerified

The graph depicts the creation of BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand) after the addition of sewage in water reservior like a river. Wlhen sewage is discharged into this water body, the aerobic decomposers present in water use the dissolved oxygen to decompose the organic matter. Thus, at point `a' where the organic matter is maximum the BOD is maximum and dissolved is minimum. At a large distance away from the point of entry, since the organic matter has already been decomposed so now the BOD is at its minimum and clue to growth of phytoplanktons there is abundant , production and so the dissolved is at its maximum leading to peak V.
