The oceans play a vital role in the survival of life on Earth, so if they were to dry up it would be catastrophic. Scientist believe that this scenario could occur in about 1.5 billion years from now, due to the sun's increased output. This increase would lead to the evaporation of all the water on Earth, which would stop the water cycle, causing the collapse of the food web and growth of plants. The majority of life on Earth would die, but some bacteria would be able to endure for millions of years in deep geological groundwater locations. It is not certain how removing this amount of mass from the Earth's crust would affect plate tectonics and volcanic activity, but it might lead to an increase in volcanic activity due to the unloading of the crust.
