A natural area can be defined as a piece of land that is either uninhabited or has limited human intervention. This could be because the area is protected, or simply because there hasn't been much human activity in the area yet. On the other hand, rural areas are typically spaces that have been cleared of trees for farming or other human activities. These two terms don't have a clear dividing line, but a good way to distinguish between them is to look at the level of human intervention in an area. Sometimes, farmland can be transformed back into a natural area by restricting or prohibiting human activities in the space.
