Question asked by Filo student

The molecules or ions which occupy the inner coordination sphere around the Ag + ions when AgNO 3 dissolves in ammonia water are to be stated. Concept introduction: Ionic compounds are those compounds which are made up of ions of opposite charges in a lattice structure. When they dissolve in water, ions get separated and attracted by water molecules. Coordination compounds consist of a coordination sphere in which a central metal ion is bonded to the ligands through coordinate bond. Outside the coordination sphere, counter ions are present to maintain the electroneutrality of the complex ion. To determine: The molecules or ions which occupy the inner coordination sphere around the Ag + ions when AgNO 3 dissolves in ammonia water.

When silver nitrate (AgNO3) dissolves in ammonia water, silver ions (Ag+) and nitrate ions (NO3) get separated by the ammonia and water molecules. Each Ag+ ion is surrounded by the ammonia molecules with nitrogen atom closest to the Ag+ ion because Ag+ ion is positively charged and attracted towards the negative end of the ammonia molecule (NH3)
