Diffusion demonstration experiment using a semi-permeable membrane. It selects particles based on their size – if a particle is small enough to go through the small holes of the tubing, then it can cross. If a particle is too large, then it does not cross. An artificial plastic tube (dialysis tube) is taken, (not a real cell membrane), and it is dipped in water just to wet the tube. One end is tied and through the other end using a funnel, pour a solution that is made of starch and glucose and that end is also tied and put inside a beaker. Inside the beaker a solution called IKI (Iodine and potassium iodide) is poured. So now inside of the tube has starch and glucose and outside of the tube has IKI. When starch and iodine interacts with each other, it forms a blue black reaction. To test the presence of glucose a test strip is used. Results after 30 mins - (a) Test strip is dipped in the solution in the beaker to test the presence of glucose. There was a color change (green) which shows that there was presence of glucose inside the beaker. This shows that glucose moved from inside of the bag to the beaker. (b) When the bag is taken outside the beaker, we can see the color change (blue black) inside the bag and there is no color change outside the bag, which is the solution inside the beaker. This shows that iodine moved from the beaker (outside of the bag) to inside of the bag. Conclusion: Write a paragraph and answer the following questions in your paragraph.
  1. Which particles were able to cross the cell membrane? Which particles were NOT able to cross the cell membrane? How do you know (cite evidence from our observations)?
  2. How do particles naturally move? You cannot say that particles always move from outside to inside or inside to outside – what is the rule demonstrated here?
  3. For the particles that moved, did they ALL move to the other side? What is the rule here?
  4. Did the movement of one particle depends on the movement of another? Explain.
