Bt-Cotton: Pest resistant varieties of cotton have been developed by incorporating toxin coding cry gene of bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis in cotton plant with the help of genetic engineering. By using Bt varieties crops are protected from attack of pest and millions of rupees are saved every year. It has been claimed that the production of cotton has increased by $45 - 50%$ by the use of Bt-cotton. Moreover the expenditure on synthetic pesticides and environmental pollution has been reduced. The Bt-cotton plant naturally produces Bt-toxin or Cry protein which kills ballworm of cotton plant. The larvae of insect are killed by eating this toxin but the cotton plant as well as human beings remain unaffected. Some scientist and a section of society has expressed serious concerns about the long term effects of Bt-crops on human being and environment.
