"Human evolved from chimpanzees" - Explain why this is not an accurate view of human evolution. In your answer: · be sure to indicate what misconceptions about evolution this statement illustrates, and · explain why there are physical similarities and differences between humans and chimpanzees (do NOT list the differences, just explain why/how they exist). Rubric: To earn full points for the ‘addresses the question and is scientifically accurate’ part of the holistic rubric, please use the following: Misconceptions about evolution:  · this statement implies that one extant species is the ancestor of another (it also implies that individuals evolve, both of which are false).  Do not need to have point about individuals don’t evolve. · humans and chimpanzees share a recent common ancestor, but one did not evolve into the other  Why physical similarities and differences  · physical similarities exist between humans and chimpanzees because they share a recent common ancestor from whom they inherited many homologous traits  · physical differences exist between humans and chimpanzees because they have acquired changes in allele frequencies independently after those two lineages diverged from their most recent common ancestor (through mutations, drift, selection)  saying that they evolved independently is sufficient – don't need to list the mechanisms, but if they do refer to some they should be correct!
