Question
Question asked by Filo student
An 82-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after falling and fracturing his nose, right tibia, right humerus, and distal phalanx of his right thumb. The fracture was managed conservatively, but he was unable to be discharged because of difficulty with daily tasks. On Day 8, the patient had a slight pyrexia with blurring of the right eye; an ophthalmologist's opinion was sought. On Day 10, he was unable to pass urine and became unresponsive, which prompted a cardiac arrest call. He regained cardiac output with no intervention, and his ECG showed features consistent with an acute inferior MI, but all these resolved. On Day 11, the patient was transferred to the ITU, where he became cyanosed and short of breath with a bounding pulse and basal crackles in the chest. The patient further arrested at 1400 hrs and could not be resuscitated. Medical history: - Varicose veins - Bilateral inguinal hernia repair with revision - Admission to the hospital with a duodenal ulcer was diagnosed What was the patient's cause of death? What were the signs and symptoms?
