(Auto means self; trophic means food) It is a type of nutrition mode in which organisms make their own food from simple inorganic matter. Digestion of food does not occur in this mode. Depending upon the source of energy used in the synthesis of food, autotrophic nutrition is further classified as: (i) Photoautotrophic nutrition: In this, sunlight is utilized for making their food (carbohydrates). Inorganic molecules like and are changed into organic molecules like carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, e.g., green plants, by the process called photosynthesis and such organisms performing this process are called photoautotrophs. Carbohydrates are utilized for providing energy. (ii) Chemoautotrophic nutrition: In this, chemical energy is utilized for making their food. Such organisms are referred as chemoautotrophs. Chemoautotrophs lacks chlorophyll pigments as they use chemical compounds for energy and for carbon. E.g., sulphur bacteria, Nitrosomonas bacteria, etc. 2. Heterotrophic nutrition (Hetero means different; trophic means food) It is a type of nutrition in which organisms get their food from some other plants or animals. They cannot mak their own food, e.g., human being and animals. Digestion is required to change complex organic compounds tha are present in food into soluble and simpler forms. Heterotrophic mode of nutrition is categorized into three types on the basis of methods of acquiring food.
