Q5. In chapter 1, we studied queueing delay. The graph in the slide shows that as traffic intensity approaches 1, the average queueing delay increases significantly. In other words, if the arrival rate is close to the service rate, which is the rate at which packets are transmitted onto the link, queueing delay will build up. Think of standing in line at Starbucks during busy hours. Under certain assumptions, average queueing delay (or expected value of waiting time) is given by (La/R) [W] = -a, where "a" is the arrival rate, "L" is the average packet length, and "R" is the transmission rate. The ratio R/L is the departure rate. This equation assumes that the departure rate is more than the arrival rate because otherwise the length of the queue will increase indefinitely. Slide 35 defines (La/R) as traffic intensity. The higher the packet arrival rate or the longer the time to transmit a packet, the higher the traffic intensity. In this single-queue, single-server model, link utilization equals traffic intensity. Link utilization is the percentage of the time the server (transmitter) is busy. Assume that the average packet length is 1560 B (bytes), and the rate of the transmitter sending the packets in the buffer onto the link is 1 Mbps (Megabits/sec). a. What is the traffic intensity and the average queueing delay while waiting in the queue for transmission, for the values given in the table below? Packet Rate: 10 705 b. Do you think a 2-second packet queueing delay is a large number? (Bonus: Vary packet arrival rate from 0 to 80.1 (use more numbers close to the top of this range), and find the average queueing delay for each value of arrival rate. Plot average queueing delay (y-axis) vs. arrival rate (x-axis). Use R or Python, MS Excel, or any language you prefer.
