Both the internal urethral sphincter and the external urinary sphincters must be relaxed in order for mail urination( micturition /voiding to take place). The internal urinary sphincter is made up of smooth muscles and therefore is not under voluntary control.but is controlled by the parasympathetic division of the CNS In contrast, the external urinary sphincter consists of skeletal muscles and therefor is under voluntary control of the brain --to a great degree. Pudendal nerve maintains contraction of the external urinary sphincter until inhibited
