In scerotherapy, an irritant is injected into the veins ; this causes inflammation and scarring . The result is blockage or severe narrowing of the scarred vessel. Either because entry is denied or it is harder to enter the narrowed vessels ,the blood finds alternate alternative routes--in healthy veins. Laser treatment is used mainly for smaller varicose veins, which may be more unsightly than painful. In venous stripping the patient is usually put under general anesthesia and the offending large vein often the saphenous vein, which has many valves-- is removed trough an incision in the skin.
