The CNS is the seat of consciousness ; it is also the source of awareness, memory and thought.
Many kinds of sensory information from inside and outside the body are conveyed to the CNS. Some of these modalities include touch, smell, pressure and pain. These stimuli may trigger reflex responses, or they may be transmitted by neural pathways to CNS neural centers where integration takes pace. Integration entails analyses of, and decisions on appropriate responses to sensory neural messages. The CNS also sends appropriate motor responses to effectors --muscles and/or glands--that result in muscle contraction and/or glandular secretion.
