6.7.2 Types of Extrinsic Semiconductors Depending upon the type of impurity added, the extrinsic semiconductors are classified into two types. They are : (i) n-type semiconductors and (ii) p-type semiconductors. (i) -TYPE SEMICONDUCTOR CDefinition : The type of semiconductor formed when a small amount of pentavalent impurity is added to a pure semiconductor is called -type semiconductor. Explanation : The pentavalent impurities, which provide a large number of free electrons in the semiconductor crystal, are called donor impurities because they donate free electrons to the semiconductor crystal. The examples are arsenic (atomic number-33) and antimony (atomic number-51). Consider a pure germanium crystal. It has 4 valence electrons and it can form four covalent bonds by sharing the electrons of neighboring atoms. Arsenic is pentavalent and its atom has 5 valence electrons. When arsenic is added to germanium crystal, four of its valence electrons form covalent bonds with four germanium atoms. The fifth valence electron of arsenic atom is free electron as there is no scope for it to form a covalent bond. Thus when a small amount of arsenic is added to germanium crystal, a large number of free electrons become available in the crystal. The semiconductor thus formed is called -type semiconductor.
