In mammals including humans, insulin is synthesized as a prohormone. Proinsulin contains an extra stretch called the C-peptide, (in addition to Chains A and B), which is absent in mature insulin and is removed during maturation into insulin.
Insulin on other hand consists of two short polypeptide chains - Chain A and Chain B which are linked together by disulphide bridges.
