Texts: Manubrium, Body, Xiphoid process, Cartilage True (1-7) Sternum (breastbone) Plb csg Vertebral column False ribs (12) Floating ribs FIGURE 8.7 The rib cage. Notice the blue-colored costal cartilage that attaches the rib cage to the sternum, a flat blade-shaped bone consisting of three separate bones that have fused. The manubrium is at the top of the sternum, followed by the body, which is the bulk of the sternum, and then the xiphoid process. This process serves as an attachment for abdominal muscles. The appendicular skeleton consists of those parts of the body that attach, or are appended to, the axial skeleton, which forms the longitudinal axis of the body. The pectoral and pelvic girdles and the bones of the upper and lower limbs of the body make up the appendicular skeleton. The pectoral (shoulder girdle) attaches the arms to the axial skeleton and allows for a lot of mobility of the arms. In contrast, the pelvic (hip) girdle, which attaches the legs to the axial skeleton, must support the weight of the upper body against gravity and allows for a lot less mobility of the legs. 2. Now look at the ribs. The topmost seven ribs are called true ribs because their terminal cartilage attaches directly to the sternum. The second set of five ribs are called false ribs because they do not attach directly to the sternum. The first three false ribs attach indirectly to the sternum, in conjunction with the cartilage of rib 7. The last set of two ribs, which are also grouped with the false ribs, are called floating ribs because they do not attach at all to the sternum. Try swinging your arms and legs in as big an arc as possible. Which one swings more easily? Try to explain the reason for differences in mobility between arms and legs. Which ribs are the longest? What might be the reason for this? Compare the flexibility and stability of the pectoral and pelvic girdles. Why would it not make sense for the rib cage to be formed of two solid sheets of bones instead of individual rib bones? ACTIVITY 6 Notice that the rib cage does not extend into the abdominal area. Speculate on the reasons for this. Examining the Pectoral and Pelvic Girdle Materials for This Activity: Whole articulated human skeleton.
