Photo-oxidation refers to the destruction of chlorophyll under the conditions of high light intensities. It is also called bleaching of chlorophyll. Excess of light makes the chlorophyll obtain a different excited state and the energy released from excited chlorophyll leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species. These reactive oxygen species damage the chlorophyll structure.
