Statement (i) and (iii) are correct about heartwood/ Duramen. Heartwood is the older, non-living central wood of a tree or woody plant, usually darker and harder than the younger sapwood. The heartwood does not conduct water but it gives mechanical support to the stem. Sapwood is the peripheral region of the secondary xylem. It is lighter in colour and involved in the conduction of water and minerals from root to leaf.
