BIO 474 PSQ 6 & 7 6) In a children's box of crayons or simple watercolor paint set, the 8 colors typically available are black, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and brown. There are only 3 cone types present in the human retina: optimized for detecting red (the L-cone), green (the M-cone), and blue (the S-cone). For the purposes of this question, we shall ignore the colors black, purple, and brown and focus on the other 5. That we consider colors red, green, and blue as primary and common is no mystery since we have our 3 cones optimized for those colors. However, yellow and orange are known to arise from combining inputs from the L- and M-cones. But here then is the question: Why are there no common and universally referred to colors that are combinations of the M- and S-cones (like yellow and orange are of M- and L-cones)? Adding to this mystery is that there is only a 30nm difference between the M- and L-cone peak absorption curves (green and red), but about 100nm (3x larger distance) difference between the M- and S-cones (green and blue). Why no (or as many) commonly named colors between green and blue? 7) Why does light have to pass through layers of retinal neurons in humans, but in other non-chordates, like arthropods (e.g. insects), the photoreceptors are the FIRST in line for the light path? Note that not putting photoreceptors first increases reflection and refraction, thereby degrading vision. Thank you in advance!!
