forms protein crystals which contain a toxic insecticidal protein. Bt toxin protein remains as inactive protoxin . Once an insect ingests the inactive toxin , it is converted into an active form of toxin due to alkaline pH of the gut , the activated toxin binds to midgut epithelial cells , and creates pores that cause swelling and lysis of the cells.
