How do Organisms Reproduce? 10 Male Reproductive System \& It consists of a pair of testis (testes) that produce the male germ cells or sperms and several secondary sex organs like a duct system, accessory glands and a mating organ. 1. Testes: These are the primary sex organs which are ovoid in shape and are responsible for the formation of sperms and male sex hormone testosterone. In addition to regulating the formation of sperms, testosterone brings about changes in appearance seen in boys during puberty. The testes are located outside the abdominal cavity. They are actually found hanging in a pouch-like structure called scrotum. The scrotum provides an optimal temperature for the formation of sperms, which is lower than the normal temperature of the body. The scrotum changes its position to maintain the required temperature. When the weather is cold, the scrotum shrinks and comes closer to the abdominal cavity to get the body heat. When the weather is warm, the scrotum moves away from the abdominal cavity to get rid of the extra heat. 2. Secondary sex organs help in reproduction but they do not produce gametes or sex hormones. - Duct system, made up of epididymis and vas deferens. - Accessory glands, include a pair of seminal vesicles, prostate gland and a pair of cowper's gland. - Mating organ : Penis Duct system : The epididymis is a set of colled tubes (one for each testis) that leads into the vas deferens. The epididymis stores the sperms temporarily. The vas deferens is a muscular tube that passes upwards alongside the testicles and transports the sperms. Each vas deferens joins the duct from seminal vesicle of its own side to form an ejaculatory duct. The ejaculatory ducts open into the urethra coming from the urinary bladder. The urethra thus forms a common passage for both the sperms and urine. The accessory glands : (i) Seminal vesicles : These are paired, tubular, coiled glands situated near the base of the urinary bladder. They secrete a viscous fluid which constitutes the main part of the seminal fluid, or semen, in which sperms are present. Thils fluid provides nourishment to sperms and acts as a medium for their transportation. (ii) A prostate gland : It lies at the base of the bladder and surrounds the beginning part of the urethra. It contributes a thin alkaline component to the seminal fluid which increases the motility of sperms. The secretion of the prostate gland nourishes and activates the sperms to swim. (iii) Cowper's glands or Bulbourethral glands : These are two small bodies that are situated one on either side of the urethra, a little inferior to the prostate gland. It helps in lubrication as well as neutralization of the acidity of male urethra. Urethra leads to the outside of the body through an organ called penis. It opens at the tip of penis as urinogenital aperture. It is a common passage for both the urine and semen. The penis : It is a muscular, tubular organ which hangs from the abdomen in front of scrotum. This is the copulatory organ of man. It is made up of two parts - the shaft and the glans. The shaft is the main part of the penis and the glans is the tip. The inside of the penis is made up of a spongy erectile tissue that can expand and contract.
