Water absorbed through root hair reaches the endodermis either by apoplastic and symplastic pathways. But once in endodermis, the movement is essentially symplastic as endodermis has presence of a ribbon-shaped impermeable strip of lignosuberin called casparian strip that runs tangentially and radially in the walls of endodermal cells.
Because of casparian strip, no substance can pass through apoplast from cortex to pericycle and it has to pass through the cytoplasm (symplast).
