The large depression made up mostly of the occipital bone is called the posterior cranial fossa. It is the deepest fossa. In between these two fossae is the middle cranial fossa, which is at an intermediate level. The latter involves the sphenoid and temporal bones. Figure 8-3 shows the ethmoid bone in the anterior cranial fossa, seen as a pale yellow structure between the orbital plates of the frontal bone. Note that it consists of a perforated horizontal portion, the cribriform plate, and an upward projecting process, the crista galli (cock's comb). The holes in the cribriform plate allow branches of the olfactory nerve to pass from the brain into the nasal cavity. The crista galli serves as an attachment for the falx cerebri, a part of the dura mater found in the longitudinal fissure. Sphenoid. Observe that on the median line of the sphenoid there is a deep depression called the hypophyseal fossa. Anterior and lateral to the hypophyseal fossa, there are the anterior clinoid processes that project backward. The outer spiny processes of the dorsum sella are the posterior clinoid processes. The hypophyseal fossa, dorsum sella, and clinoid processes, collectively, make up the sella turcica, or Turkish saddle. Temporals. The significant parts of the temporal bone to identify in Figure 8-3 are the petrous and squamous portions, the carotid canal, and the internal acoustic meatus. The squamous portion of the temporal is that thin portion that forms a part of the side of the skull. The petrous portion (label 8) is probably the hardest portion of the skull. It contains the hearing mechanism of the ear. On the medial sloping surface of the petrous portion is seen an opening to the internal acoustic meatus. This canal contains the facial nerve.
