The nervous system develops from the ectoderm following an inductive signal from the mesoderm. The initial mesodermal cells condense to form the notochord, which elongates under the primitive streak along the anterior—posterior axis of the developing embryo.
The ectoderm is the outermost of the three primitive germ layers of the embryo. From it, the derivatives are the epidermis and epidermic tissues, such as nails, hair and glands of the skin, the nervous system, external sense organs and mucous membrane of the mouth and anus.
