How do organisms which cannot migrate tend to overcome adverse environmental conditions? Explain taking one example each from vertebrates and angiosperms respectively.

Text SolutionText solutionverified iconVerified

When an animal is unable to migrate it can avoid stress by escaping in time. As an example the polar bear undergoes hibernation in winters and some snails and fish go into aestivation in summer. The angiosperms show modification to adapt to their surroundings such as modification of leafs into spines in , opening of stomata at night time in xerophytic plants, the presence of aerenchyma in leaves and stem of aquatic plants. In higher plants seeds serve as means to tide over periods of stress and go into a state of 'dormancy' during stress.

E. coli are enteric (gut-dwelling) facultative anaerobic bacteria. (Facultative anaerobes can grow either with orwithout free oxygen. Obligatory anaerobes grow only inthe absence of free oxygen.) Researchers planned to growcultures of coli under a range of conditions to model thetransition from strictly anaerobic to aerobic respiration. The oxygen content of atmospheres at constant totalpressure will be controlled by volumes of nitrogen andoxygen gases. Ratios of volume, between 0and 0.25 of shaken growth flasks can be measured in termsof optical density, which is the percent of transmission oflight through a sample of the growing . coli culture. Arule of thumb is that the range of strict anaerobes is when r and the boundary for aerobic respiration is when =0.05 .E\mathrm{m}2.5 \mathrm{m},
