Cytokinins (CK) are a class of plant growth substances that promote cell division, or cytokinesis, in plant roots and shoots. Cytokinins are found in abundance in young roots, leaves and young fruits where rapid cell division occurs and are synthesized in the meristematic regions of the plants. Cytokinins have been implicated in many plant activities; usually along with some other plant hormone such as auxins or ethylene. Among these are: mitosis, chloroplast development, differentiation of the shoot meristem, stimulating the development of lateral buds and therefore branching, differentiation of the tissues of the root, leaf formation and leaf senescence.
