Conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of plants or animal species is called ex-situ conservation. It is the process of protecting endangered flora and fauna in their natural habitat. 4% of the country's total geographic area is used for on-the-spot protection. The biosphere reserve covers a large area (more than 5,000). They have long been used to protect species. There are 18 biosphere reserves in India. National parks are dedicated areas for the protection of wildlife and their environment. It is usually a small reserve with an area of about 100 to 500 square kilometers. One or more national parks may exist within the biosphere reserve. Today, there are 104 national parks in India. The National Wildlife Refuge is an area reserved solely for animal protection. Currently, there are 543 wildlife sanctuaries in India. Ex situ conservation means "ex situ conservation". It is the process of protecting endangered species outside their natural habitat. Preservation of seeds, pollen, tissues, or embryos can be done in liquid nitrogen called cryopreservation. This method can be used to store materials indefinitely without damage for a much longer period of time compared to all other methods outside the habitat-conservation of animal genetic resources. Large-scale outdoor planting is used to protect the genetic diversity of wild, agricultural, or forest species. Species that are difficult or impossible to obtain in seed banks are stored in field gene banks.
