(i) Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria.
(ii) Diarrhoea is characterized by abnormally loose or watery stools. A prolonged bout of diarrhoea can cause the body to lose more fluid than it can take in, leading to dehydration.
(iii) Cholera is an easily treatable disease. The majority of people can be treated successfully through prompt administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS). ORS is a sugar and electrolyte solution. It typically contains sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate and glucose. Severely dehydrated patients are at risk of shock and require the rapid administration of intravenous fluids. These patients are also given appropriate antibiotics to diminish the duration of diarrhoea.
