Compete the following three paragraphs by filling in the blanks that describe reproduction in the male and female and then during pregnancy. Note: correct spelling is essential. In males, spermatozoa are produced in the testes within tubules known as the seminiferous tubules. This process, called spermatogenesis, is driven by several hormones, one of which is testosterone. Testosterone is secreted by the testes. The immature sperm that are produced then make their way to the epididymis where they are partially matured and then stored. During ejaculation, they make their way first to the ductus deferens before being mixed with the secretions of three glands, these are the seminal vesicles and prostate gland. In females, oocyte production, called oogenesis, produces a primary oocyte during the fetal period. These oocytes only complete the final stage of development and enter into meiosis II during ovulation. In the ovary, the oocyte is surrounded by cells that support the oocyte, making up a follicle. These cells secrete the hormone estrogen, which, when secreted in high amounts just before ovulation, causes a spike in luteinizing hormone secretion from the pituitary. This spike causes two events to occur: ovulation and formation of the corpus luteum. If this ovulated oocyte is fertilized, it will rapidly divide by mitosis and eventually form a morula, then later a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst. The hollow ball of cells is made up of an outer trophoblast and an inner cell mass, and secretes the hormone progesterone as it makes its way into the uterus. This hormone's main function is to maintain the corpus luteum in the ovary, which then secretes the hormones progesterone and estrogen to maintain the lining of the uterus in preparation for implantation.
