Eutrophication occurs when a body of water is enriched by nitrates and phosphates from runoff of fertilizers from farms, detergents, and human wastes to the body of water. These nitrates and phosphates act as nutrients for algae and stimulate algal bloom. When the algae die and decompose, the level of oxygen in the water is depleted and anaerobic decay processes take over, causing the death of other aquatic life.
