922 - Oversecretion in adults results in acromegali. In this disease the peripheral bones (such as fingers, hands, jows etc. become unusually broad and protruded. Hyposecretion (Undersecretion) of - Undersecretion of GH in childhood leads to dwarfism. The sufferers are called 'pituitary dwarfs'. - Hyposecretion in adults cause symptoms of oldness, weakness etc. 2. Thyrotropic hormone (Thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH) - It is a glycoprotein hormone, with two polypeptide chains alpha and beta, attached to a carbohydrate residue. Functions - The major action of this hormone is to stimulate the thyroid gland. It controls the growth and activity of the - It influences the uptake of iodine, the synthesis of the hormones, thyroxine and tri-lodothyronine , by the thyroid giand. - It stimulates the release of stored thyroid hormones into the blood stream. Hypersecretion - Hypersecretion of TSH, causes excessive secretion of thyroid hormones. The effects due to hypersecretion of TSH are similar to those, which are caused by oversecretion of thyroid hormones. Hyposecretion - Hyposecretion of TSH, causes reduced secretion of thyroid hormones. The effects due to hyposecretion of TSH are similar to those, which are caused by deficiency of thyroid hormones. 3. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or Adrenocorticopin - It is a peptide hormone, containing 39 amino acids. The first 24 amino acids are common in all species (in which it is found), while remaining 15 are species specific. Functions - This hormone stimulates the 'zona fasciculata' and 'zona reticularis' of the 'cortex of the adrenal gland' to produch its hormones (cortisol). - Besides, ACTH also has a mild effect on the stimulation of melanocytes (which controls pigmentation). - The hypothalamus increases the production of ACTH during emotional and physical stress. 4. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) - It is also peptide in nature with molecular weight 32,000 . Functions In females FSH promotes the growth of Graafian follicle and stimulates it to secrete estrogens (a type of femque sex hormones). It promotes the growth of oogenesis in femaies. - In males it promotes the growth of follicular cells and also promotes spermatogenesis. 5. Interstitlal-cell stimulating harmone (ICSH) or Luteinising hormone (LH) - it is aiso a peptide hormone with molecular weight 32,000 . Functions 6. In females it promotes the growth of corpus luteum and stimulates it to secrete progesterone (another fermit sex hormones). (an inales it stimulates the growth and development of interstitial cells of Leydig and stimulates them to secret testosterone (principal male sex hormone). (Note i FSH and LH are together known as 'pituitary gonadotropins'). 3. Prokactit hormone (PRL) or Mammotropin or Luteotropic hormone (LTH) S. Prolactin hormone is a peptide hormone. It contains 198 amino acids. Its effects are well known in females. w It secretion becomes very high during pregnancy.
