Why should the metal sulphides and carbonates be converted to metal oxides in the process of extraction of metal from them?

Solution: It is easier to obtain a metal from its oxide than from its sulphides or carbonates. Hence, in the process of extraction of metal from metal sulphides and carbonates, they are first converted to metal oxides.
