With 7 billion people on the planet, the demand for global resources continues to grow. This is an excessive and unnecessary consumption of resources. Deforestation and ecosystem destruction lead to the loss of biodiversity. Human colonisation leads to usage of the natural resource and also overexploitation and hamper of the biodiversity. One such example is the colonisation of tropical pacific Island by humans is said to have led to the extinction of more than 2,000 species of native bird. The IUCN Red List (2004) documents the extinction of 784 species in the last 500 years. The list includes 338 vertebrates, 359 invertebrates, and 87 plants. Some examples of recent extinctions include the dodo (Mauritius), quagga (Africa), thylacine (Australia), Steller’s Sea Cow (Russia) and three subspecies (Bali, Javan, Caspian) of the tiger.
