Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are nontoxic, non flammable chemicals containing atoms of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. The chlorofluorocarbons are the compounds responsible for both ozone depletion and contribution to the greenhouse effect. Gaseous CFCs can deplete the ozone layer when they slowly rise into the stratosphere, are broken down by strong ultraviolet radiation, release chlorine atoms, and then react with ozone molecules.

In order to cut the DNA with cterium sriction enzymes, it needs to be in pure form, free from other cabranes, we have to break the cell open to release DNA along rith other macromolecules such as RNA, proteins, wysaccharides and also lipids. This can be achieved by treating te bacterial cells/plant or animal tissue with enzymes such as rsozyme (bacteria), cellulase (plant cells), chitinase (fungus). iou know that genes are located on long molecules of DNA aterwined with proteins such as histones. The RNA can be removed by treatment with ribonuclease whercas proteins can be removed by tratment with protease. Other molecules can be removed by appropriate tratments and pun? DNA ultimately precipitates out after the addition of chilled ethanol. This can be seen as collection of fine threads in the suspension (Figure 11.5).
