Procedure 1: Gather the necessary materials: microscope, digital camera, safety gloves, goggles, loveaty goggblank ide cover lcube pipetsK solution microcope. Put on your safety gloves and goggles. Place a sheet of paper towel onto your workspace. Place a clean slide and cover slip onto the paper towel. Note: The paper towel prevents the slide and cover slip from being scratched by the worksurtace. Use the short stem pipet to transfer one drop of distilled water onto the center of the slide. Use a clean toothpick to gently scrape a few epithelial cells from the inside of your cheek, taking care not to induce bleeding. Place the end of the toothpick containing the cells into the drop of water on the slide, gently mixing the water and cells together while keeping the drop of water intact. Hold the cover slip above the slide at an angle, touching the water drop containing the cheek cells with the lower edge of the cover slip. See Figure 9. Note: As the drop of water comes into contact with the cover slip, the water will wick along the junction of the cover slip and the slide. Slowly lower the upper edge of the cover slip onto the water droplet. Place a piece of paper towel at the edge of the slide to remove excess water and further flatten the cover slip. Note: Air bubbles trapped under the cover slip prevent the cover slip from completely flattening the specimen and lead to difficulties with staining and viewing under the microscope. If air bubbles are present under the cover slip, repeat steps 4-8. Write your name and the date on a sheet of paper and place the slide on the paper. Take a photo of the slide with your name and the date visible in the photo and upload the image into Photo 13. Place the prepared slide on the microscope and view with the 4x objective. Focus on one or more cheek cells.
