Eli Lily, 1993 synthesized human insulin using recombinant DNA technology. They prepared two DNA sequences corresponding to A & B chains of human insulin and introduced them to plasmids of to produce insulin chains. Chains A & B were produced separately, extracted, and combined by creating disulfide bonds to form human insulin.
The insulin so produced was called humalin and is different from naturally produced insulin because it is produced in the mature form while the human insulin is produced in the proinsulin form having an extra stretch called C-peptide.
