Project Tiger was launched by the government of India in 1973 . It is a conservation program. The aim of the project was to maintain an optimum population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats and also to protect them from extinction.
There are currently 49 tiger reserves in India which are governed by Project Tiger which is administered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority.
