In poriferans, the body is loose aggregate of cells (meshwork of cells). Internal cavities and canals are lined with food filtering flagellated cells i.e. choanocyte/collar cell. Choanocytes help in filter feeding.

45 Biological Classification Kingdom Monera This kingdom comprises prokaryotic single celled organisms (Fig. 6). These include all bacteria possessing ribosomes and a naked, circular strand of DNA that serves as a chromosome, but generally Fig. 6 A-J. Various forms of monerans : A-E. common forms of bacteria; A. bacillus; B. streptococcus; C. staphylococcus; D. spirillum; E. budding bacteria (Hyphomicrobium spp.). F. mycoplasma; G. actinomycete mycelium; H-J. common forms of cyanobacteria; H. Spirulina; I. Nostoc. J. Oscillatoria. lacking membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, lysosomes, peroxisomes, and endoplasmic reticulum and a true nuicleus. They divide by binary fission rather than mitosis but may undergo genetic recombination. Their fossils have been found in rock strata that are billion years old. Monera is divided into two broad subkingdoms : Archaebacteria and Eubacteria. Archaebacteria (archae means ancient) are probably the oldest of living cells. Their cell walls lack peptidoglycan, a substance found in the walls of eubacteria. The phototrophic forms use the pigment bacteriorhodopsin instead of bacteriochlorophyll used by eubacteria. At the molecular level their t-RNA and r-RNA possess unique nucleotide sequences found nowhere else. All archaebacteria live in extreme environments (such as absence of oxygen, high salt concentration, high temperature and acidic pH) where other bacteria can not survive. It has been suggested that these ancient monerans evolved at a time when such extreme environments were actually typical of conditions throughout the biosphere and that they are merely adhering to the patterns of their early origins. Eubacteria have extremely wide range of characteristics. They may be autotrophs (photo-o chemoautotrophs) or heterotrophs. Cyanobacteria, formerly known as blue-green algae, are the larges and most diverse group of photosynthetic bacteria. The great variety in their size, shape and metabol activities allows them to thrive in diverse environmental conditions; in thermal hot springs whe temperatures can be over ; in snow of high mountains; in marine and fresh waters; in soils; or even otherwise lifeless volcanic rock. Monerans are important decomposers and mineralisers in the biosphe
